Data from a 911 dispatcher or patient’s medical records should be imported, not entered manually.

Training

Physicians want to triage, schedule appointments, and arrange transportation for patients in one place.

Working out

During triage, physicians need to know a patient’s gender, age, date of birth, and location.

The problem

The Tough Mudder app doesn’t provide users with a way to find teams nearby to train with.

Research

Tough Mudder is an obstacle-course race in which participants can compete on teams. However, the Tough Mudder app does not provide users with a way to find teams and train together.

My teammates and I interviewed six Tough Mudder participants to learn more about their Tough Mudder experience, how they exercise, and what fitness apps they use.

What kind of participants are we designing for?

Moderate athletes

Goal: Find a supportive group to train with

Pain point: Motivation training alone

Extreme athletes

Goal: Win Tough Mudder events

Pain point: Finding equally motivated teammates

Our solution

By creating an app that allows Tough Mudder participants to join teams, create teams, and work out with teammates, they’ll be more motivated to train for events.

Concept exploration

With interview insights and business goals in mind, the design team and I explored features for our solution.

We started with user flows to understand how pieces of the experience would work and fit together. Then, we translated our flows into sketches, which evolved into high fidelity wireframes as we iterated.

Changes based on user feedback

Team details

“I’d like the team details to have sections for events and members."

Team overview

“The team overview should show me how many members they have, where they’re located, and any upcoming events.”

Nearby teams

"I'd like to see where nearby teams are physically located."

Takeaways

  • Test early to reduce time and effort on ideas that don't work.

  • Ensure consistency when adding features to an existing experience.

  • User satisfaction is more important than the success of your own ideas.

Next steps

  1. Redesign the interface layout so it’s more consistent with the current Tough Mudder app.

  2. Incorporate group chat into the activity feed.

  3. Do more testing and iterate based on user feedback.

Takeaways

  • Strive for simplicity, especially when users’ time is limited.

  • Change is the only constant in design. Embrace and expect it from users and stakeholders.

  • Proactive, frequent communication with partners is key to working efficiently.

  • Avoid featuritis and scope creep to deliver elegant designs quickly.
